El gobierno de la ciudad de San Francisco (Estados Unidos) anunció que a partir del próximo año empezará a emitir documentos municipales de identidad en los que no se incluirá el sexo de los ciudadanos, se informó hoy.
La medida, aprobada a última hora del martes, beneficiará principalmente a los transexuales, que presionaron para eliminar la información sobre el sexo de los propietarios de las tarjetas de identidad.
El nuevo documento municipal de identidad de San Francisco también podrá ser emitido a inmigrantes ilegales, que normalmente no pueden acceder a un documento de identidad federal válido en todo el país.
Para obtenerlo solo será necesario presentar una foto, un permiso de conducir extranjero y un recibo reciente de la luz o el gas o, en su defecto, un extracto bancario.
Tom Ammiano, miembro del gobierno de la ciudad de San Francisco e impulsor del nuevo documento de identidad, destacó su importancia para la comunidad de inmigrantes ilegales y para los transexuales.
"Cuando estas personas cambian de sexo, el estado les suele poner las cosas difíciles", dijo Ammiano. "Este documento municipal les ayudará un poco".
En cuanto a los inmigrantes ilegales, dijo que la tarjeta de identidad es una respuesta a la falta de reforma de las leyes de inmigración a nivel federal.
"Si nuestros amigos y vecinos no pueden participar en la vida cívica, acabaremos perdiéndolos", aseguró.
El documento es válido para todas las gestiones municipales pero no podrá usarse como permiso de conducir ni como identificación para acceder a ciertos programas federales de seguridad social.
